Elcometer Testing
Coating Thickness Testing
Industrial coatings are specified to a thickness for a reason. Too thin, and the coating can’t hold back moisture and corrosion. Too thick, and it can crack or fail to cure properly. Elcometer testing measures the dry film thickness (DFT) of a coating, so you know it was applied the way the job calls for.
What Is Elcometer Testing?
Elcometer makes coating thickness gauges used across the protective coatings industry. Placed on the cured coating, a standard electronic gauge reads its dry film thickness without damaging the finish. Taking readings across a part shows whether the coating falls within the thickness range in the specification.
Why Coating Thickness Matters
- Too Thin – Thin spots give less protection against moisture, chemicals and corrosion, and they are the first to fail.
- Too Thick – Excess film can crack or cure poorly, and it wastes material.
- On Spec – A coating at the right thickness performs the way it was engineered to.
Who Needs Coating Thickness Testing?
Customers in oil and gas, water and wastewater, construction and other industries often work to a coating specification. APS built our business working with the oil and gas industry, and we have decades of experience applying industrial coatings and powder coating to industrial parts and equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does an Elcometer measure?
The Elcometer gauges used for coating thickness measure dry film thickness, which is how thick the cured coating is on the part.
Does thickness testing damage the coating?
Standard electronic thickness gauges read the coating without damaging the finish.
